Just a few minutes inside to warm up wouldn't hurt I thought, and slipping off my walking shoes, I climbed inside feeling the warmth of the down envelop me immediately. I lay facing out to the villages below, the lights mesmerising as they sparkled ever brighter.

I don't know how long I had been out but I suddenly woke up, very aware of being cold under my back. I opened my eyes to see that I had inadvertently rolled off my sleeping mat and was now lying on the cold hard ground, quite dangerously close to the edge of a ledge. It was one that had seemed a safe enough distance away when I'd scouted this spot, but now was much too close for comfort, definitely more extreme than I had intended this sleep to be. Certainly, if I wanted ledge sleeping I should at least employ a portaledge (a hanging tent system designed for rock climbers). Below my face the ground tumbled sharply away and had I rolled any further, I would most likely have woken up as I bounced back down towards the village of Barley. I sat up fast – well as fast as anyone can when fully zipped up in a sleeping bag – then decided that the best way of moving was by rolling, rather ungraciously, back to my mat.
